Design objective DO: Design objectives for the blockchain documentary-workflow prototype

The prototype's nine design objectives are: (DO1a) digitize paper-based process steps, e.g., document sending, mapping a fully digitized process; (DO1b) avoid multiple originals and signatures by using digital documents; (DO2) automate manual document checking via smart contracts; (DO3) allow for concurrent document processing so participants need not wait for paper documents; (DO4) impose an overall real-time tracking system; (DO5) provide an end-to-end traceable process history; (DO6) make process participants (persons) transparent, each identifying before acting; (DO7) shorten overall process time; (DO8) keep high flexibility for varying situations (e.g., different countries and document requirements); and (DO9) lower overall costs.

Cross-Organizational Workflow Management Using Blockchain Technology - Towards Applicability, Auditability, and Automation

The paper derives design objectives for a blockchain-based documentary-workflow (BDW) prototype and implements them on a private Ethereum chain, demonstrating applicability, auditability and automation of a cross-organizational trade process.
